and it leaves a brittle sounding overdrive tone instead of being clean unless gain is turned up a bit more into more easily recognizable overdrive. When volume on the audio interface is turned up and input gain is turned down, headroom is increased revealing the actual tone. But between these two, overdrive is not easily recognizable because the cabsim does a good job of filtering away harsh sounding frequencies, leaving only brittleness and a strange feeling of "something is wrong".
