I was in your boat. I'm going after a Soldano SLO100 tone in a 20-30 watt recording version. After reading a whole lot of forums and a couple of books I decided on a High Octane as my first build. The learning curve is steep. I still feel like a total noob and I just finished my HO a few months ago. I am still working out some squeal issues with some modifications I installed but I'm very close to boxing it up in the head and saying I'm happy with it. Its not an SLO but it's still a cool amp that has great tone and is super fun to play. I still want to build a Soldano clone but I don't think I want 50 watts like the kits at C3Amps [link] so I am going to read Merlins [link] books and see if I think I can clone it myself. If I do it myself it may end up more like an Atomic 16 with two EL84's in a push pull configuration. |
