Do a search for 'light bulb limiter'. It helps define shorts before they burn you. (sorry). Also, I always first power up without any tubes installed. A smoking PT is never a good sign, but you may get lucky. If you anticipate being in this hobby for a while, invest in a quality meter - you'll be using it enough to justify the extra cost.
