Thanks for the tips so far, you have all been nothing but helpful! Here are the promised pics: [link] [link] [link] However, as you can see form the title I am now getting some glorious tube tone! I still have a couple of issues to be sure but I am making great progress now. Th breakthrough was unintentional - I unsoldered both the input and output sockets from the board and did some tests with an ohm meter. Input was 0.7 ohms without a cable, 1M with an unplugged cable and 15K when plugged into a guitar, as expected. I found a problem with one of the OT switch positions being open circuit (nicely protected by the shunt resistor!) but swapped the gangs round one and everything tested out fine, with the expected resistances with plugged and unplugged cables. When I soldered it all back together it just worked straight away! So, who knows - a dodgy connection that I re-soldered maybe? I still have a couple of problems - the dark channel doesn't seem to work at all (most likely a link I missed on the board), and the biasing seems a little funky, but I'll take a look at that tomorrow - enough progress for now! Initial impressions are that the overdrive is really nice, but there is not much clean headroom - maybe because my voltages are low, maybe because the bias isn't set right. I'll have some questions about the biasing soon I am sure :) |
